For its fiscal third quarter ended March 31, 2012, Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division (that includes the company's gaming and console operations) reported revenue of $1.616 billion, compared to revenue in the same quarter the previous year of $1.935 billion. This resulted in an operating loss for EDD of $229 million, compared to operating income of $210 million in the same quarter the prior year.

Microsoft blamed the EDD shortfall on a "soft gaming console market." Microsoft apparently sold 1.4 million Xbox 360 units during the quarter, around half the number sold in the same quarter the previous year. Of course, we're nearing the end of a console cycle, after a serious of serious discounts on the current generation, so that's hardly surprising.
