| | Comments (0)
SonySony announced that it will acquire Ericsson's 50% stake in Sony Ericsson, absorbing the mobile handset business entirely into Sony. Sony is paying Ericsson €1.05 billion (around $1.5 billion) for Ericsson's stake, allowing Sony to better integrate smartphone handsets and giving Sony licensing or ownership of important groups of patents relating to phone handsets. Sony expects to manufacture smartphones that will have access to Sony's network of content, including the PlayStation Network. The transaction should close in January of 2012, subject to regulatory approval.
