MicrosoftMicrosoft announced its financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter and full fiscal year ended June 30, 2011. For the fourth quarter, Microsoft reported net income of $5.874 billion, compared to $4.518 billion in the same quarter the previous year. For the fiscal year, Microsoft reported net income of $23.150 billion, compared to net income in the prior year of $18.760 billion. The impressive increase in profitability for Microsoft resulted from growth in nearly every division, but FI readers are likely to be more interested in The Entertainment & Devices Division (EDD) that includes Xbox and PC gaming.

For the fourth quarter, EDD enjoyed revenues of $1.485 billion and operating income of $32 million (compared to revenues of $1.144 billion and an operating loss of $172 million in the same quarter the previous year). For the full year, EDD reported revenues of $8.913 billion and operating income of $1.324 billion (compared to revenues of $6.168 and operating income of $618 million in the prior financial year).

Microsoft clarified that increases in EDD revenues primarily reflected "higher Xbox 360 platform revenue." Not only did Microsoft sell more Xbox 360 consoles than in the prior comparable quarter, Microsoft sold 13.7 million Xbox 360 consoles in this latest fiscal year, compared with 10.3 million in the previous fiscal year.
