Sony Reports Higher Income From Game Division
Sony announced its consolidated financial results for its fiscal third quarter ended December 31, 2010. Read on for more details...
For its fiscal third quarter, Sony announced net income of ¥72.3 billion (around $885 million), compared to net income of ¥79.2 billion in the same quarter the previous year. Sony attributed its lower income to unfavorable exchange rates and poor sales of LCD televisions, but did mention strong income from its games business. Sony has also taken a number of steps that may not interest those focusing on games (for example, Sony has realigned its various business divisions).
Sony's Networked Products & Services Division (that includes Sony's game operations) reported operating income of ¥45.7 billion (compared to operating income of ¥19.5 billion in the same period the prior year) on lower operating revenue of ¥566.6 billion (compared to operating revenue of ¥605.5 billion. While sales decreased, Sony attributes this to unfavorable foreign exchange rates. Operating income, however, improved thanks to cheaper production of the PlayStation 3 and higher software sales.
