Sony Returns to the Black, Games Plagued by Platform Shift

Sony announced its financial results for its second fiscal quarter ended September 30, 2010. Read on for details concerning Sony's game business...
For the quarter ended September 30, 2011, Sony reported net income of ¥31.1 billion (around $375 million) compared to a net loss of ¥26.3 billion in the same period the previous year.

Networked Products & Services is the business at Sony that includes its gaming business. This unit posted operating income of ¥6.9 billion (around $84 million) compared to an operating loss of ¥59.0 billion in the same period the previous year. Sony noted that "While game business sales in total decreased year-on-year, sales of PlayStation 3 hardware and software increased year-on-year." Put another way, the company probably suffered poor sales of the PSP, PSP Go and PlayStation 2, and wants to emphasize the improved performance of the PlayStation 3 thanks to "significant hardware cost reductions and higher sales."
