The Entertainment Software AssociationAccording to the Entertainment Software Association (the ESA), "Overall computer and video game industry hardware, software and peripheral sales climbed to $21 billion in 2008, with entertainment software sales comprising $11.7 billion of that total figure..." Those are US sales figures and indicate an increase of 23% in software sales than last year.
Based on numbers (based on the United States alone) from the NPD Group, video game console software sales reached $8.9 billion while PC game software sales were $701.4 million and portable software sales totaled $2.1 billion. In total, NPD counted 297.6 million games sold in 2008. These numbers, presumably, don't count downloaded content or recurring billing and premium content for games such as massively multiplayer online games.
