Sony's Game Unit Reports Operating Income, Increased PlayStation 3 Sales

Today, Sony released its financial results for its fiscal third quarter ended December 31, 2007.
For the quarter, Sony reported net income of ¥200.2 billion (around $1.9 billion), compared to ¥159.9 billion in the same quarter the previous year.


Sony's game division reported operating income of ¥12.9 billion (on sales and operating revenue of ¥581.2 billion), compared with an operating loss of ¥54.2 billion (on sales and operating revenue of ¥442.8 billion) in the same quarter the prior year. Sony reported having sold 4.9 million PlayStation 3 units, 5.76 million PSP units and 5.4 million PlayStation 2 units. Sony also reported selling 26.0 million PlayStation 3 games, 18.3 million PSP games and 60.9 million PlayStation 2 games.

Sony emphasized that sales of the PlayStation 3 had increased (as did the sale of games) even though sales of the PlayStation 2 declined.
