Battlefield Heroes to be "Free-to-Play, Fun for Pay"

| | Comments (0)
Electronic Arts confirmed today that it will release a "free" game as part of the Battlefield franchise that will make its money from advertising and the purchase of in-game items.
Like massively multiplayer online games that are free to play but require players to buy items to really enjoy themselves, EA plans to launch Battlefield Heroes as a PC download this summer. The game is still being developed by the Stockholm DICE studio, but will be more casual and feature cartoonish graphics. The real issue is that the game will also be supported by "advertising and micro-transactions." In other words, the "robust character customization" EA says will be available will involve players paying real cash for in-game advantages. Hopefully, free play won't just be confined to soldiers in red jumpsuits carrying one-shot pistols.
