Sony Purchases Worlds Apart and Starts Work on Electronic Version of Pirates Hobby Game
Sony Online Entertainment announced that it has acquired key assets of Worlds Apart Productions. Worlds Apart has created online games that emulate collectible card games, including the online version of The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game, Star Chamber, and the Auto Assault Trading Card Game.
Worlds Apart's infrastructure allows Sony Online Entertainment to more easily add other collectible card game-style titles.
Furthermore, SOE announced that it has signed a deal with WizKids, a hobby company that creates collectible miniatures games such as HeroClix, to create an electronic version of the Pirates constructible strategy game. The Worlds Apart team, now called SOE-Denver, will create the game.
While it's understandable that SOE wants to ensure it has a toe in the online analog of the hobby game market, especially with so many MMOGs creating collectible alter-egos, it's hard to envision the online version of Pirates as a major profit center. The game is compelling because it is physical and offline. If you're at a computer, there are plenty of exciting electronic alternatives.
