PlayStation 3 Launching in November with a Hefty Price Tag

Sony plans on launching two versions of the console, one with a 20 GB hard drive, and one with a 60 GB hard drive. Both versions will have slightly less functionality than was planned and announced at last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. For example, the console will now only support one output screen rather than two.

The console will launch in Japan on November 11, and in the US and Europe on November 17. The version of the console with the smaller hard drive will launch at $499, ¥59,800 and €499, depending on region. The 60 GB version will launch with a suggested price of $599, €599 and a price open to retailer's discretion in Japan.

Sony also revealed that while the controller for the PlayStation 3 will look much like the previous PlayStation line of controllers, the controller will be able to detect motion – the controller will detect three dimensions of motion (along the X, Y and Z axes) as well as three types of rotation (roll, pitch and yaw). Now this functionality needs to be integrated into the PlayStation 3's lineup of titles.
