Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Summary and Images

Gamers have been waiting since 1997 for a true sequel to the PlayStation game Final Fantasy VII. Despite the many Final Fantasy games released since then, none have resolved the events begun in that game. While the final release date is yet unannounced, the sequel is on its way. And it looks as staggeringly beautiful as Square Enix's CG sequences typically look. But it isn't interactive. As many of you have known since this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is a film that will be released on DVD.

Advent Children has a top-notch staff that have considerable experience with the Final Fantasy franchise, including:
  • Yoshinori Kitase – Producer
  • Tetsuya Nomura – Director and Main Character Designer
  • Takeshi Nozue – Co-Director
  • Yusuke Naora – Art Director
  • Nobuo Uematsu – Music Composer
Today, Square Enix released new images from the upcoming film. Those images, Square Enix's summary of the plot of the original Final Fantasy VII and a brief teaser of the Advent Children plot can all be found below:

Final Fantasy VII: Story Summary

Shinra, Inc., in the hopes of cementing its economic and political sway over the city of Midgar, begins exploiting the planet's natural resources. Behind optimistic claims that the mako energy it mines will bring eternal happiness, Shinra secretly uses its newfound resources for financial gain and sinister technological research. However, mako energy is more than just an energy source – it is the very life force of the planet. The rebel group known as AVALANCHE realizes the danger of this energy depletion and mobilizes against Shinra, using guerrilla tactics to disrupt its operations.

Shinra's elite guard, or SOLDIER, once counted both Cloud Strife and the mysterious Sephiroth among its ranks. Sephiroth, greatly admired by Cloud, led the group – until he departed under mysterious circumstances. After a certain incident, Cloud also leaves SOLDIER and becomes a mercenary. Unbound by principles or emotions, he accepts a mission with AVALANCHE to destroy one of Shinra's mako reactors. The mission starts Cloud on a journey to discover his lost past and true identity, leading him to a destiny of unimaginable proportions.

As the story unfolds, Cloud realizes the importance of mako energy and the value of life. Members of AVALANCHE and other friends open Cloud's heart as he draws closer and closer to the truth of his nebulous past. Meanwhile, Sephiroth, who shares Cloud's origin at the hands of Shinra, re-emerges as a callous enemy bent on destroying the world. Cloud's friend Aerith is murdered by Sephiroth. In turn, Cloud strikes Sephiroth down in a final confrontation, putting an end to his madness and avenging Aerith.

In the closing sequence of FINAL FANTASY VII, the Lifestream – the collective life force of the planet – intervenes, halting Sephiroth's plan. The world is saved, but as peace returns, the fate of Cloud and his friends remains unknown.
